A Legacy of Precision Since 1833
1833 – Founded in Providence, RI
Joseph R. Brown and his father founded “David Brown & Son”, making and repairing clocks, watches, and light precision tools.

1851 – Invented the Pocket Vernier Caliper
Joseph R. Brown invented the practical pocket vernier caliper, setting a new standard in portable precision measurement.

1857 – Introduced the Brown & Sharpe Wire Gauge
Joseph R. Brown introduced the standardized wire gauge system that formed the foundation of today’s American Wire Gauge (AWG), still used worldwide.

1867 – A Milestone in Precision Measurement
Introduced the world’s first practical micrometer, a turning point in industrial measurement.

1868 – Incorporated as Brown & Sharpe Mfg. Co.
After Lucian Sharpe joined as partner in 1853 (renaming the firm Brown & Sharpe), the company is formally incorporated.

1964 – New Manufacturing Facility in North Kingstown
Opened a 700,000 sq. ft. modern plant in North Kingstown, Rhode Island—marking a major expansion in scale and technology.

1994 – Acquired DEA, Italian CMM Manufacturer
Strengthens capabilities in coordinate measuring technology by acquiring DEA, the leading Italian CMM manufacturer.

2001 – Acquired by Hexagon AB (via TESA)
Brown & Sharpe becomes part of the Hexagon AB group within the TESA division, remaining part of Hexagon AB until 2024.

2025 – Brand Relaunch
Launching a new chapter in Brown & Sharpe’s precision legacy—blending centuries of expertise with modern innovation.
