1833 – Founded in Providence, RI

Joseph R. Brown establishes the company that would go on to define precision engineering for nearly two centuries.

1850 – Invented the Pocket Vernier Caliper

Brown invents the pocket vernier caliper, setting a new standard in portable precision measurement.

1855 – Created Metal Gauge (Predecessor to AWG)

Developed a standardized metal gauge system, forming the basis of the American Wire Gauge system used today.

1868 – Renamed Brown & Sharpe; Introduced Micrometer

Lucian Sharpe joins the company and the brand name Brown & Sharpe is born. The company introduces one of the world’s first micrometers.

1964 – 700,000 sq. ft. Facility in North Kingstown

Opened a 700,000 sq. ft. plant in North Kingstown, Rhode Island—marking a major leap in scale and technology.

1994 – Acquired DEA, Italian CMM Manufacturer

Strengthens capabilities in coordinate measuring technology by acquiring leading Italian CMM company DEA.

2001 – Acquired by Hexagon AB (via TESA)

Brown & Sharpe becomes part of Hexagon AB, a global leader in precision measurement and digital manufacturing solutions.

2025 – Brand Relaunch

Ushering in a new chapter of Brown & Sharpe’s precision legacy with the launch of a full product line, blending centuries of expertise with modern innovation.
